3 pulled from Lake Erie after boats overturn
Three men who had been fishing in Lake Erie off Kelso Beach on Friday morning found themselves the unwitting subjects of the third large-scale water-rescue operation on the lake this week.
The men, from Pittsburgh, were a few thousand feet from shore when their orange inflatable raft and a brown canoe that was pulling it overturned. Someone who spotted the men in the water called 911; rescue teams, including several fire departments and the U.S. Coast Guard were sent to the beach at the foot of Oregon Avenue in Millcreek Township at 10:40 a.m.
The three men were still in the water when the first crews arrived on scene, West Lake Fire Chief Kirk McCaslin said.
Lt. Andrew Carne and Firefighter Marcus Kalivoda of the West Lake Fire Department borrowed a personal watercraft from a resident of the beach and retrieved the three men before the Coast Guard arrived, McCaslin said. The men had life jackets, and they were floating on them when they were pulled from the water, Kalivoda said.
The men were not injured, and said they were not in distress when the rescue crews came to retrieve them.
The Coast Guard reported winds of 10 to 15 knots and 4- to 5-foot waves at the time of the rescue.
Friday's incident followed an extensive search Tuesday night of the waters off Barracks Beach at Presque Isle State Park for a 7-year-old boy whose body was found the next morning, and on Wednesday night for a 27-year-old man who disappeared in the lake after jumping off a sailboat and whose body was found later that night. Both drowned, according to the Erie County Coroner's Office.

VERMILION — The Vermilion Police Department’s Marine Patrol rescued man from Lake Erie yesterday evening, according to a news release.
The Police Department received a 911 call about 8 p.m. from a resident of Shadyside Drive who observed a capsized boat in the water with a person clinging to it a quarter-mile north of the Bluebird Beach area.
The Marine Patrol boat arrived on scene about 8:10 p.m., and pulled the man out of the water. The boat, a 10-foot inflatable Mercury, was secured to the back of the Marine Patrol boat and towed in.
According to the news release, the inflatable boat had been secured to the back of a 38-foot Searay when 5- to 7-foot waves jarred it loose. The man, a passenger on the Searay, decided to put on a life jacket and jump in to retrieve it.
He was unable to pull himself onto the boat, and the boat had drifted into water that was too shallow for the larger boat to assist, the release said. The man was not hurt.
