Sheriff's deputies and Clarke County police officer Osceola joined law enforcement officials from several neighboring counties of training active shooting earlier this month, Murray, taught by the Des Moines Metro Special Tactics and Response ( STAR) Team.

STAR operates as a specialized unit within the Office of U.S. Homeland Security, providing staff training in the use of specialized equipment to treat a wide range of critical incidents. The one-day training was held in community schools and Murray gave the officers an opportunity to better prepare in case there was ever an active shooter and hostage situation on a building or school bus such as the Columbine shootings in 1999 in Littleton, Co.

"God thank you, we never had anything like that happen," said Rob Clarke Deputy Kovacevich. "But we must be prepared in case something were to happen."

The training officers a chance to practice entries into the school, classrooms and a school bus and learns how the building and classrooms are set up, said Kovacevich. However, he stated that training will also be useful in other buildings, as well.
It was the first activity-shooter training local officials participated in the county.

Kovacevich said that the local agent of hope to set up training situations different at least once or twice a year. Kovacevich said the training allows the different agencies to work together as a team and will ready them in case one county needs to assist another in a situation.

Dealing with an active- shooter and hostage situation in a school also involves the help of school officials, he said. The officers met with Murray Schools administration to talk to them about safely evacuating the school and what kind of information they’ll need to provide when making a 9-1-1 call to better prepare officers.
