Cleaning Up Fenton Since 1972

Ray York is in the entertainment field. That's how he explains some of his company, Fenton Sew & Vac.

"These are toys," he said of his display of Baby Lock sewing machines of the brand. "No more sewing clothes. These are fun things. "

Most of his customers are quilting sewing and embroidery as a hobby creativity. It sells basic machines for beginners and more complex models, such as sergers (sewing machines, cutting and binding the edges of the fabric in one pass), embroidery machines and computerized machines just for quilters.

Sew & Vac sells 100 percent cotton piqué fabric, yarn, sewing notions and offers a variety of sewing classes. Customers who buy a machine receive free, personalized lessons on machines.

The other half of its activity is more utilitarian.

"Everybody needs a vacuum," said York.

He tries to offer its customers the best cleaning machines it can find. "We cherry-pick the best models, based on our experience, to give the customer the best thing for them at each price level," he said.

In its range Riccar vacuum cleaners are lesser known but high quality that are manufactured in St. James, MO. York said the American-made machines are superior to the better known Hoovers and Eureka, which he also performs.

He also sells cleaning products for cleaning companies or owners interested in industrial power products.

Fenton Sew & Vac was born from the Haute Couture Ridge Center, which was started by his parents, Ray and Aleda York in 1972. Later, they added locations in Fenton and Washington, but from the top-York died, his son does the store Fenton.It is not a kind of guy multilocation, York said.

He began working with his father after being laid off, first of Chrysler in the 1980s and later McDonnell-Douglas. He said his father asked him to assist in the repair of sewing machines, and he never left. Now, he, his wife and son run the business grew.

It connects many hours on the work bench to repair sewing machines. He learned enough about the machines for the test and the stitches, even demonstration to customers.

But, he said, "You would not wear anything, I would sew."

These days, his wife, Dorothy handles sales of sewing machines.

The service department Sewing & Vac has grown with the company. The store has four full time technicians, two for two vacuums and sewing machine.
