And since I’m a little excited about the market recovery, I’ve extended my article up to April 6, 2011. So far, this is the performance of Mutual Fund Companies in the Philippines as of April 6, 2011.
Most of the negative performance in the last update were now floating above the water. On the Equity Funds, Sun Life Prosperity Funds along with Philequity Fund, Inc. and Philequity PSE Index Fund Corp are now up by more than 2%. On the Balanced fund, almost 2% and for Bond Funds, almost on the positive side.
nice to know that MFs are doing well so far… just got “a bit bothered” by this post from Robert Kiyosaki from his page, “Mutual funds give NEGATIVE leverage. They have fund fees and taxes sucking money OUT. You’d do better investing on your own.” Do MFs really suck out a lot of taxes and other charges? I heard that MFs are more expensive that investing stocks on your own. I hope it’s there’s no “big” difference with regards to charges, etc.
Hi Greysie17, the good thing about mutual funds here in the Philippines is that it’s TAX Free ( http://financial-planning.gigabyteshosting.com/index.php/2011/02/interesting-facts-on-mutual-fund-in-the-philippines-frequently-asked-questions/ ).
Re: fund fees, there are mutual funds like Sun Life that is absolutely no sales charge if invested for at least 6 years. Besides, MF’s are best for long term investment horizon.
Re: is it more expensive than investing in stocks? Based on experience, buying and selling stocks shares you pay for commission fees + tax, unlike MF’s that you can get away with it. Mas exciting nga lang cguro sa stocks kasi you are your own fund manager, unlike sa MF, there is someone managing the funds for you – which is on the other hand, can be an advantage. Coz if you don’t have time monitoring the market, best to invest in MF. But if you want some thrill and got some time off your schedule, stocks is a lot more exciting.
Take Robert Kiyosaki`s advice with a grain of salt! He is basically a realtor, not a stock expert! So, take his advice on real estate but not on stocks! His style is in contrast with the style of say Warren Buffet, who is one of the richest people in the world! Kiyosaki is relatively unknown until he wrote his controversial book Rich Dad, Poor Dad!
