But then that’s why we — like hundreds of thousands of others — have come to Andy Griffith’s real-life hometown and the putative Mayberry, “hometown” of the quintessential folksy, feel-good situation comedy, (1960-1968). And the 35-minute drive-by sightings we are about to take in of both the historical Mount Airy and the imaginative Mayberry make up just one of the mandatory, nostalgic stops back in time, both to an America that is no more and to my own boyhood in Ohio.
Call it a collective, national rerun and you won’t be far wrong. And reruns are certainly the key to Mount Airy’s newfound popularity. Thanks to the wonder of cable TV, an estimated 1 million viewers now drop by each month for a neighborly visit with Sheriff Taylor (Griffith), his bumbling deputy Barney Fife (Don Knotts), his freckle-faced son Opie (Ron Howard), his doting housekeeper, Aunt Bee (Frances Bavier), and the supporting cast of laughable, but lovable townsfolk.
