Hike set for Aug. 5

Chino Hills Recreation Department on Aug. 5 will host a summer Tike Hike around Lake Los Serranos for children from 3 to 6 years old and their parents.

The hike will be from 4 to 5p.m. at English Springs Park at the corner of Chino Hills Parkway and Grand Avenue.

At the end, participants will be invited to make a craft project and enjoy a snack.

Cost is $6 per child.

Pre-registration is required by Aug. 3.

Last call for Chino Hills National Night Out

There is still time to join thousands of communities nationwide such as Chino Hills for the 28th annual National Night Out, a crime and drug prevention event.

The Aug. 2 event was designed to heighten awareness and to strengthen police-community relationships.

Neighbors will be able to gather, get reacquainted and discuss how to make their neighborhoods safer, according to city officials.

Residents can join the effort by getting together with their neighbors to organize barbecues, potlucks or dessert socials on their block.

In Chino Hills, City Council members, San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies, Chino Valley Independent firefighters, Citizens on Patrol volunteers and even McGruff the crime-fighting dog will visit registered neighborhoods.

Chino Hills Tiny Tots registration set Aug. 6

Fall registration for Chino Hills' Tiny Tots Program, which teaches academic and socialization skills to children from 3 to 5 years old, will be held Aug. 6.

Participants are involved in a variety of activities, such as games, craft projects and supervised free time.

Children must be potty-trained and a birth certificate must be presented at registration.

Chino Hills residents receive priority and may participate in a lotto drawing from 8 to 9 a.m. at the Founders Recreation Center, 2000 Founders Drive.

Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m.

If space is available, non-Chino Hills residents may register during the week of Aug. 22.

The Tiny Tots program is offered at Mystic Canyon Community Building, 6424 Mystic Canyon, and Founders Recreation Center.

The fall session is from Aug.29 to Oct. 7.

Level I is for kids who will be 3 years old by Aug. 30. The group meets from 9 to 11 a.m. or from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cost is $82.

SECOND NATIONAL PRESCRIPTION DRUG RECOVERY DAY

The Drug Enforcement Administration and the government, community, public health and partners in law enforcement will again be offering the public an opportunity to prevent abuse and theft of pills by ridding homes of prescription drugs potentially dangerous. Saturday 30 April, 10 am-14 hours, the DEA and its partners will hold their second national prescription Take Back days at sites throughout Southern California. The service is free, anonymous, no questions asked.

This initiative responds to a vital public safety and public health problem.Many Americans are unaware that drugs that languish in closets in the house are very susceptible to misuse, abuse and violence. According to the 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows that rates of abuse of prescription drugs to the U.S. Americans are alarmingly higher current abuse of prescription drugs as the number of those using cocaine, halogens, and heroin combined.

"The Americans shot in excess of £ 242 000 to 121 tons - of prescription drugs at nearly 4100 sites operated by more than 3,000 of the state of the DEA and local partners in law enforcement," said Sheriff Rod Hoops."The success of the Prescription Drug Take Back First Day Nationwide offered in September of last year is clearly an indication of the importance of this program is the safety of the citizens of San Bernardino County," he added.

"Prescription drugs Take-Back program offers area residents a safe way to dispose of their unwanted drugs," said Timothy J. Landrum, DEA special agent in charge. "Unused or expired medications are a public safety issue, and can lead to accidental poisoning, exaggerate and abuse.  That is why we are committed to helping keep homes in our communities safe, by ridding our medicine cabinets of expired, unused and unwanted drugs.”

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department will have nine stations participating with the collection of these unused prescription medications.   They will be open on Saturday, April 30th, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and no appointment is necessary.   The participating sites are listed below:
