Chris Gay once stole a tour bus, now wants to stop running

The impostor has taken the tour bus million in the USA International Speedway at dusk. He was wearing a NASCAR hat and new white sneakers. He was calm and collected when he entered the front office and lied through his teeth.

He said he was on the team before the superstar, Tony Stewart and that Mr. Stewart was planning a surprise visit. He said he needed a generator to the bus.

"What did you say your name?" The manager asked.

"Daniel Pitts."

"Name of the race good," the manager said later, "but I knew something was wrong."

Lawmen throughout the South had been searching for the man who escaped from a prison transport and ran faster than 19 cops and two canine units in South Carolina, flew a Freightliner in Georgia, stole a trailer in Walmart Tennessee.

The authorities there are almost caught when he ran in the small town of Pleasant View, trying to see his mother, Annie, who was lying on his deathbed, eaten with cancer and shaking his image.Half a dozen or more police dragged the semi and brash white knuckles fugitive to the wheel as he headed the big rig down twisting two-lane Tennessee 70 mph, then up and over a dirt berm and a red field, hammer, 100 meters from the trailer his mother, then 75, then 50, then stuck in the mud. Her sister watched from the back porch, saw out, a little man standing out the lights on the berm that fighting dogs were barking and the cops shouted.

But then he was gone.

And now, two days later as a manager at the racetrack in Lakeland called the police and learned the tour bus was stolen from Nashville and he belonged to country music star Crystal Gayle, the bandit disappeared again, just the rear lights and diesel fumes and unanswered questions.

As I write, he had escaped police custody 13 times so lucky and resourceful.He ran for 20 years by January 2007, when he pulled the stunt with the tour bus for a brief moment and grabbed a handful of the nation's admiration for the bandits entertaining. Even some police appeared to be pulling for him.

"You can understand why he did what he did," said Coopertown, Tennessee, Police Chief Dave Barrera, who promised to leave to visit his mother if Gay turned in.

Gayle has been nice, too.

"I feel for each of them," she said by telephone. "I just want everyone to be safe.
