METHUEN — Dozens of spray-painted designs, letters and words appeared on homes, mailboxes, cars and businesses along Merrimack Street and Merriline Avenue in the town's East end, police said.

"It seems like kids walking from one location to another and doing the tagging in between," said Capt. Randy Haggar. "We have a couple of suspects."

Haggar said the tagging began near Merrimack and Pleasant Valley streets and continued up Merrimack Street, to East and Swan streets near the Lawrence line, a distance of about two miles.

Some 32 locations along the route were sprayed, Haggar said.

Detective Rick Pilz, working an extra shift in the patrol division late Sunday night discovered the damage.

Pilz, who is investigating with Officer Joe Rynne, said the taggers walked on Merrimack Street from the Haverhill line, to the Lawrence line at East and Swan streets.

He said some cars were tagged at Valley Towing, 150 Merrimack St., and among the other businesses hit were the Sargent Club at 143 Merrimack St.; Rite Way Travel at 211 Merrimack St.; New England Seafood at 225 Merrimack St.; and Alfredo's Barber Shop at 166 Merrimack St.

Pilz said the tagging included the words "lost," "Bond," and the letters "PST" and that some of the tagging was done in the balloon-style writing.

Some of the damage can be painted over, but plastic fences and vinyl siding hit with the spray paint may have to be replaced, Pilz said.

He estimated the damage at $15,000 to $20,000.

Ron Parrino, owner of Valley Towing, said a fence, five cars and the side of his house were spray-painted.

The damage was taken care of during the day yesterday, he said.

"We were able to give them some information that may help with the investigation," Parrino said.
