Drayton Valley council briefs
RESTAURANT APPROVED FOR NEW ZONING
With no comments or concerns from the public presented at a public hearing Drayton Valley councillors approved a zoning change for Ceasar's Restaurant. Proponents were asking to change the property's zoning from General Commercial to Bar and Entertainment District. The new zoning would allow the existing restaurant to be used as a bar/lounge. Conditions of the rezoning include the need for a new occupancy load certificate as well as a fire inspection.
DEBENTURE FOR LAND PURCHASE GIVEN OK
The Town of Drayton Valley will borrow $1.7 million to purchase 107 acres of land at the south end of the municipality. The lands are located in the area designated for the development of the Bio-Mile. Back in May town councillors gave administration the go-ahead to start the process.
Council believes that if the municipality owns the property it will be more attractive for potential investors and developers interested in the Bio-Mile.
During administration reports at the end of the meeting Town CAO Manny Deol noted that there had already been some interest expressed in the property for Bio-Mile development.
The $1.7 million debenture will be repaid over a 15 year span.
NEW FEE
CALCULATION
PROPOSED FOR HOTELS
The Town of Drayton Valley is looking at implementing a new business license fee for businesses termed lodgings in the town limits. Lodgings include hotels, motels and bed and breakfast establishments. Last week councillors gave first reading to an amendment to the Business License Bylaw that would calculate fees based on 50 per cent of a business' Tourist Accommodation Levy from the previous year.
That levy, which is generally passed on to customers goes to the provincial government.
Mayor Moe Hamdon said that while the Town of Drayton Valley appreciates all the lodging style businesses in the municipality, they do cause an additional strain on municipal services such as policing.
"This allows an opportunity for the users of the services to partially pay for these services," he said.
Many municipalities are beginning to implement similar provisions, he said.
The amendments presented to Drayton Valley councillors were based on a bylaw in the Town of Banff.
Business operators who would be affected if the amendments were passed are aware of what the town is proposing said Hamdon.
