To understand what defines an ideal anniversary gift, consider an example of a poor one recalled by Carolyn Kendrick, gift department manager at Busch Jewelers.

"I had a customer who said, 'My husband will love that Waterford lamp for his anniversary. The reason I know is because he gave me a shotgun for mine,'" Kendrick said.

If you are challenged on anniversary gift ideas, the first thing to consider is "to please the one who is receiving the gift and that it be a lasting remembrance," said Cindy McCathren, owner of Under One Roof.

For those wanting some more definitive suggestions, consider the list of traditional anniversary gifts first codified by etiquette expert Emily Post in 1922. Her initial list in her hallmark book "Etiquette" offered gift ideas for the first year of marriage, followed by seven other years up to the 75th.

In subsequent editions of the book, the list was expanded to include more years. A more modern list has been developed and become popular.

Susan Crossman, store manager for Jordan Taylor & Co., said traditional gifts are more often requested by customers searching for presents to mark 40th and 50th anniversaries.

"We believe that because there are so many more choices and options (for example on the Internet) people are making nontraditional choices. People's mindsets have changed and traditions are changing," Crossman said in an email.

Kendrick's first suggestion for any customer looking for an anniversary gift, regardless of the year, is much more succinct than the traditional and modern lists.

"Jewelry is always a good idea," Kendrick said.

Knowing the recipient's favorite jewelry designer is helpful in narrowing down the selection, she said.

If sticking with the traditional and modern anniversary lists, consider how some of today's trendy items fit into them. Crosses and candles are popular home decorations, McCathren said, and they can be made of glass, wood, steel or a variety of other materials on the lists.

One suggestion for a watch — or even fashion jewelry — is the SLAP watch, said Laurie McAdams, marketing and special leasing manager at Mall of Abilene.

The SLAP watch has a silicon band with a spring coil bracelet inside that wraps easily around the wrist. The brightly colored bands and watch faces are interchangeable.

If looking for a gift with iron or wood for a man, think creatively, such as a new golf club or a high-end knife such as one by William Henry, Kendrick said.

1. Does your boyfriend or husband like a digital watch, or an analog watch?

There are people who just have problems reading an analog watch, as they have been too used to reading time from a digital watch. And the reverse is true as well.

So it is really important to note what kind of a watch does your boyfriend or husband prefer?

To be honest, I am not used to reading time from an analog watch. In my childhood days, the digital ones are rather cheap and so I spent more time with digital watches instead.

My girlfriend will tell me that she is not used to reading time from a digital watch.

Do note this important aspect well before you buy a good watch, as good watches tend to be a little pricey.

2. What kind of style does your boyfriend or husband have?

I like the cool and elegant look for a watch. Some of my male friends prefer the unique and quirky looking ones.
