Brantley Gilbert brings 'guns blazing' show to Flint's Machine Shop
ROYAL OAK — Country-rock singer Brantley Gilbert is infallibly polite. He ends nearly every sentence with "Yes, ma'am" and he kindly dodges questions about the near-fatal crash that inspired his music career. Instead, he refers writers to YouTube clips, such as www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRXcO3jOtr4 , where he discusses his crash."I don't really talk about it," said Gilbert, who was headed to visit kids at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis on the day of the interview. "I will say it was a life-saving experience. I was always one of those kids who thought it would never happen to me — and it did. That's pretty much the gist of it."
Gilbert was born and raised in the small town of Jefferson, Ga., just outside of the city limits of Athens, which birthed R.E.M. and the B-52s. It is that upbringing and small-town influence that Gilbert credits toward allowing him to cultivate his unique, Southern rock-inspired sound.
"I've been writing songs for as long as I can remember," Gilbert said. "I used to make them up as I went for girls, if they came by to see me. Sometimes it worked; sometimes it didn't. I still got shot down but it was always worth a try."
On March 16, 2010, Gilbert released his sophomore album, "Halfway to Heaven," the follow up to his 2009 debut national release, "A Modern Day Prodigal Son." The second album peaked at No. 2 on iTunes Country Album Charts, and at No. 1 on the Billboard Heatseekers Album Chart for all genres.
"The Best of Me," a song from Gilbert's first album, was recorded by country superstar Jason Aldean and earned a spot on his iTunes release "Wide Open." In August 2010, Gilbert's song "My Kinda Party" became a No. 1 hit for Aldean, as did "Dirt Road Anthem," also written by the up and comer. Gilbert explained he and Alden have bonded over their Georgia roots and love for country music.
"I'm beyond thrilled that he recorded those songs," he said. "He did very well by us. I'll say he did them very well to fit him, the style and what he's doing."
Last February, Gilbert inked a deal with Big Machine Label Group's imprint The Valory Music Co. — home to superstars Reba McEntire and Jewel as well as No. 1 chart-topper Justin Moore.
Gilbert is working on his first album for the label with award-winning producer Dann Huff. In the meantime, Gilbert said the deluxe edition of "Halfway to Heaven" is set for release soon.
"I've realized that life can be very short, and everyone should take advantage of it," Gilbert said.
