<strong><span class="subhead">KANSAS CITY, KAN. | Charges in shooting death</span></strong></p><p>A Kansas City, Kan., man was charged Tuesday in the June 25 shooting death of Carlos Hernandez, the Wyandotte County district attorney’s office said.</p><p>Allen L. Mitchell, 29, faces charges of first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, possession of cocaine, aggravated battery and criminal possession of a firearm. His bond was set at $1 million.</p><p>Hernandez, 21, was killed inside an apartment in the 1400 block of North 38th Street.</p><p><strong><span class="subhead">KANSAS CITY | Homicide victim identified</span></strong></p><p>Police on Tuesday identified a man shot to death Friday in the 2600 block of Euclid Avenue as Brandon Wright, 18, of Kansas City. Witnesses said a person in a gold Chevrolet Blazer shot Wright about 10:30 p.m. as he stood on the corner with a friend. The injured friend was not cooperating with police, investigators said. Wright used to live in Lee’s Summit, but had been staying with his grandmother, who lives in the area.</p><p><strong><span class="subhead">KANSAS CITY, KAN. | Drowning victim named</span></strong></p><p>Police on Tuesday identified a 5-year-old boy who drowned Monday as Cole A. Neidholdt of Kansas City, Kan. He was pulled from the pool about 4 p.m. at a house in the 2600 block of North 77th Street, police said. He later was pronounced dead at a hospital. The boy was staying there with his mother, they said.</p><p><strong><span class="subhead">CLAY COUNTY | Man charged in dragging of officer</span></strong></p><p>A Kansas City, Kan., man was charged after he allegedly dragged a Gladstone police officer during a traffic stop late Sunday near Northeast 69th and North Cherry streets, prosecutors said Tuesday.</p><p>David B. Gallo, 49, faces charges of second-degree assault of a law-enforcement officer, first-degree burglary, tampering, resisting a lawful stop and leaving the scene of an accident, Clay County prosecutors said. Gallo was arrested late Monday near Water Works Park in Kansas City. His bond was set at $250,000.</p><p>The officer suffered minor injuries, court records say.</p><p><strong><span class="subhead">KANSAS CITY, KAN. | Superintendent honored</span></strong></p><p>Kansas City Kansas School District Superintendent Cynthia Lane was honored Tuesday by the district’s school board after receiving a 2011 Superintendent of Promise award. </p><p>Lane originally received the award in June from the executive board of the Kansas School Superintendents Association. </p><p>School district officials said the award is designed to honor first-year superintendents “who demonstrate clear vision, courageous decision-making and a focus on student achievement.

Conspired to recruit and pay "straw purchasers" to purchase properties they would not normally qualify to purchase, with the intent of taking control of the properties to collect rent on and to sell within a short period of time, and divide the profits among them. The "straw-borrowers," were paid various fees and were regularly advised by the defendants that they would not be responsible for the mortgages for which they were applying.
In addition, the indictment alleges that schemed to commit mail and wire fraud by obtaining mortgages on three properties which he expected to control, two of which were obtained in the name of an associate based on false and fraudulent information.
United States Attorney Peter F. Neronha announced the indictments.
The cases are being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Luis M. Matos.
The matters were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Office of Inspector General, and Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigations.
An indictment is merely an allegation and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government's burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
