SUNY program offers learning opportunity for teachers-in-training, disabled youths
In that room are students from local districts, SUNY art education majors, a professor, and occasionally some of the local students' parents. For her class "Art and the Exceptional Child," Professor Alice Wexler has brought local middle and high school students to the campus arts environment since the fall of 2009. New Paltz district teachers and counselors have been notified of the opportunity and have passed the information along to students they think might profit from it. Called Arts-2-Gether, the program was started by the international nonprofit Organization on Arts and Disability. It's designed to offer disabled adults and children a chance to work creatively outside a school setting. Wexler has integrated Arts-2-Gether into a college curriculum in partnership with the New York State Alliance of Arts in Education. A half hour before the local students arrive for their Arts-2-Gether sessions, Wexler meets with her college class to discuss any issues they've confronted. She and her students also meet on another day of the week to learn theory and further discuss practice. But no lesson plans are prepared. Instead, Wexler said, she and her students have always gone "wherever the children took us." In that spirit, the room dictates no physical boundaries for the sessions. Sometimes a local student may have a condition that makes it difficult for him to maintain concentration or an art project may require equipment found elsewhere. In such cases, the teams take off for a quieter space, perhaps the building's computer room or the great outdoors.
