Understanding the cost of access
Tuition, program fees, aid, scholarships, relocation — and which costs recur.
By The YATIR Initiative research teamLast reviewed October 2026
For many 2e families, the barrier is not only finding a school but paying for it and getting there. These are the costs to plan for.
The parts of the bill
- Ordinary Jewish day-school tuition — the base price for the grade.
- Specialized program fees — some schools bill an integrated support program separately, on top of tuition.
- School financial aid — usually need-based; ask whether it applies to the program fee as well as tuition.
- External scholarships and community resources — local federations, foundations and disability organizations sometimes help.
- Relocation — moving costs, housing deposits, and a possible change in housing costs if the right school is in another community.
Recurring versus one-time
| Cost | How often |
|---|---|
| Tuition and program fees | Every year, usually rising |
| Outside therapies and evaluations | Ongoing or periodic |
| Moving and transition | Once |
| Higher housing costs in a new community | Every year |
Example planning figures
YATIR's proposed founding budget uses these example award sizes to plan its pilot. They are planning examples, not prices, offers or grants.
| Example category | Example amount |
|---|---|
| Day-school tuition (the family's share after financial aid and other assistance) | $15,000 |
| Specialized program assistance | $35,000 |
| Relocation and transition | $25,000 |
